George L. Powell, founding member of the Powell Firm – Texas Trial Lawyers PLLC, is a Houston Attorney and former District Court Judge practicing state law in Texas and federal law nation-wide. Mr. Powell grew up in Rockville, Maryland, just outside Washington D.C., where he played football and was a wrestler. He is also a musician, a bass-player since the age of twelve.

Mr. Powell went on to graduate from Towson University in Baltimore – and then from the historic Thurgood Marshall School of Law, at Texas Southern University in Houston. He has been practicing law for twenty years and takes great pride in defending the innocent.

In November of 2016, Attorney Powell was elected, by the people of Harris County, Texas, to the office of Judge in the 351st District Court. There, he presided over serious felony cases such as capital murders; aggravated assaults; robberies; sexual assaults; crimes against children and drug cases.

In January of 2019, Judge Powell was elected, by his fellow District Court Judges, to the position of Judge of the Harris County Felony Veterans’ Treatment Court. The VTC is an alternative to traditional felony court which focuses on the treatment and rehabilitation of men and women who served our country, and were honorably discharged, before committing law violations. VTC offers the opportunity for treatment of drug and alcohol issues as well as other issues such as PTSD. Best of all, VTC offers Veterans the opportunity to resolve their charges without a felony conviction.

Judge Powell presided over both courts until the end of his term in 2020, then came back into private practice in January of 2021 to establish the Powell Firm – Texas Trial Lawyers PLLC, which is located in Houston’s historic 3rd Ward.

Mr. Powell is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers; the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association. He holds licenses in both law and real estate.

The Powell Firm - Texas Trial Lawyers PLLC is a proud donor to: Lakewood Church; the Star of Hope; the Houston Food Bank; the United Negro College Fund; the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
